Family

Stem

Exudate very copious, sometimes slightly yellowish. Deciduous; leafless for a period between June and August.

Leaves

Leaf blades about 8-14 x 2-2.5 cm. Milky exudate from broken twigs and petioles.

Flowers

Involucre usually red. Glands present on the involucre. Staminal filaments about 0.5 mm long. Female flowers solitary in the centre of the involucre. Ovules 1 per locule.

Fruit

Capsules about 4-7 mm long and about 4-9 mm diam. Seeds carunculate.

Seedlings

Cotyledons +/- orbicular to elliptic or obovate, about 14-15 x 12-13 mm. At the tenth leaf stage: exudate milky and copious, produced by all plant parts. Venation faint, difficult to discern, more obvious on the underside. Underside of the leaf blade much paler than the upper surface. Stem thick and swollen. Seed germination time 15 days.

Distribution and Ecology

Occurs in WA, CYPNEQ and CEQ. Altitudinal range from near sea level to 200 m. Grows in monsoon forest and similar forest communities close to the sea. Also occurs in Malesia.
