Stem

Densely tufted perennial 10-30 cm tall.

Leaves

Leaves reduced to membranous ferruginous sheath that does not break up into fibres, ligule absent.

Flowers

Inflorescence a single terminal spikelet without involucral bractsvc; spikelet erectacute, 4-9 -flowered; rachilla winged. Glumes spiral, cartilaginous, erect, lanceolate and acute, with a weakly developed green keel, indistinctly 3-5 nerved; style minutely and sparsely ciliate.

Fruit

Nut obtusely trigonous with convex faces, dorsiventrally compressed, obovoid and white to brown with widely spaced large papillae.

Distribution and Ecology

Occurs in WA, NT, CYP, NEQ, CEQ and southwards to south eastern Queensland. Altitudinal range from sea level to 440 m. Grows in notophyll vine forest, Melaleuca forest, eucalypt forest and swampy areas in various types of woodland.
