Grewia australis Burret

Usually flowers and fruits as a shrub about 2-4 m tall.

Leaves two ranked. Leaf blades lanceolate to narrowly ovate, about 4-13 x 2-5 cm, petioles about 0.5-1.2 cm long. Upper surface clothed in simple hairs, lower surface clothed in stellate and simple hairs. Margins serrate with about 25-35 teeth on each side of the leaf blade. Stipules narrowly triangular, about 2 mm long. Twig bark strong and fibrous when stripped. NB. Petiole of even thickness throughout its length. Not thickened towards the apex (D.A. Halford pers. comm.).

Flowers about 16-20 mm diam. Sepals green on the outer but white on the inner surface, about 10-15 mm long, densely stellate hairy on the outer surface, inner surface glabrous. Petals about 2-4 x 1.5-2 mm with a glandular area on the inner surface near the base surrounded by a zone of white hairs. Petal inner surface mainly hairy, outer surface glabrous. Stamens numerous, filaments about 0.5-2 mm long, glabrous. Ovary densely clothed in white hairs, style about 3-3.5 mm long, stigmas or style branches four, lacinate.

Fruits deeply bilobed or globose, each fruit or lobe about 6-10 mm diam., surface hairy. Seeds about four per fruit, each seed enclosed in a hard endocarp. Seeds flattened, about 4-6 mm long. Cotyledons much larger and wider than the radicle.

Probably endemic to Queensland, occurs in CYP, NEQ and CEQ. Altitudinal range from near sea level to 600 m. Grows in monsoon forest and vine thickets.
