Gynochthodes sp. Iron Range (B.Hyland 11587)

Vine stem diameters to 5 cm recorded.

Leaf blades about 7-10 x 2.5-4.5 cm, petioles about 0.7-1.2 cm long. Lateral veins about 7-10 on each side of the midrib. Upper and lower leaf blade surfaces clothed in short pale-coloured hairs. Domatia (if present) are tufts of hair. Stipules densely hairy, about 3-6 mm long, enclosing the terminal bud and encircling the twig with a bifid apex on each side.

Flowers borne in heads consisting of four to ten flowers, each head on a peduncle about 7 mm long. Flowers about 6 mm diam. Calyx lobes very small and inconspicuous. Cigar-shaped glands or included fibres visible just beneath the surface of the calyx tube (hypanthium). Corolla lobes about 4 mm long. Ovules four per locule.

Fruits of about four flowers fused together into a globose or depressed globose head about 7-9 mm diam. Seeds numerous. Each seed about 3-4 mm long, testa hard and bony. Radicle narrower than the cotyledons.

Occurs in CYP. Known only from collections made in the Claudie River area. Altitudinal range from near sea level to 150 m. Grows in gallery forest or lowland rain forest. May also occur in New Guinea.
