Loesener, L.E.T. (1903) Notizblatt des Koniglichen Botanischen Gartens und Museums zu Berlin 4: 62. Type: Nord-Ost-Queensland, im schattigen Urwald am Mittel-Barron bei Kuranda in 350 m Hohen. M.: L. Diels n. 8466.

Stem

Thin orange layer under the dead bark.

Leaves

Leaf bearing twigs winged. Leaf blade margins often recurved. Leaf blades about 7-17 x 2.5-5 cm. Midrib raised on the upper surface. Lateral veins scarcely visible on the underside of the leaf blade on fresh leaves. Stipules aristate but visible only on very young twigs.

Flowers

Inflorescence usually 4-6 branched. Primary peduncle about 45-90 mm long. Petals about 4 mm long. Disk yellow, surrounding the stamens and ovary. Ovary with 10 ovules per locule.

Fruit

Capsules about 5.5-10 x 2.5-3 cm. Seeds about 10 mm long on elongated funicles. Aril much larger than the seed. Fruits probably green at maturity but turning red after shedding the seed?

Seedlings

Cotyledons narrowly elliptic, about 7-8 x 2 mm. First pair of leaves elliptic, margins toothed. At the tenth leaf stage: leaf blade narrowly obovate or narrowly elliptic, apex acute or apiculate, base attenuate, glabrous, midrib raised on the upper surface; wings on stem start at base of petiole; stipules very small, narrowly triangular. Seed germination time 255 to 451 days.

Distribution and Ecology

Endemic to NEQ. Altitudinal range from 100-1300 m. Grows in well developed rain forest on a number of different rock types but is often associated with granite.
