Stem

Seldom exceeding 30 cm dbh.

Leaves

Leaf blades about 4-12 x 2.5-5 cm tending to be alternate and not spirally arranged on the twigs. Foveoles present on the midrib and occasionally on the lateral veins. Fine oak grain in the twigs.

Flowers

Sepals about 1-1.2 mm long. Petals deltoid, about 0.7-0.9 mm long, puberulous. Disk cupular, about 1.5 mm diam. Staminal filaments about 0.1-0.2 mm long, attached to the margin of the disk. Ovary glabrous, ovules 2 per locule.

Fruit

Fruits globular or depressed globular, about 6-12 mm diam. Seed +/- globose, about 5.5-6 mm diam. Testa smooth. Embryo small, about 1 mm long.

Seedlings

Cotyledons obovate, emarginate with a small gland at the apex of the midrib. At the tenth leaf stage: leaf blade elliptic to obovate, apex acuminate, base cuneate, glabrous, underside usually with crater-like foveoles along midrib; stipules small, triangular. Seed germination time 47 to 115 days.

Distribution and Ecology

Endemic to NEQ. Altitudinal range from 700-1200 m. Grows in upland and mountain rain forest.
