Large Leaved Canthium; Shiny Leaved Canthium; Inland Native Coffee; Canthium
Sapwood surface corrugated. Hard, brittle, brown or orange stripes in the blaze. Blaze darkens markedly on exposure.
Calyx lobes short but obvious. Corolla tube about 2-3 mm long, lobes about 2-4 mm long. A distinct, dense ring of downward pointing hairs near the apex of the corolla tube, glabrous elsewhere. Corolla lobes glabrous except for the minutely papillose margins. Stigma peltate, +/- mitriform, 2-lipped at the apex.
Cotyledons linear, about 14-22 x 4 mm. Cotyledonary stipules interpetiolar, more than 1 mm long, curving downwards. Stem hairy below the first pair of leaves. At the tenth leaf stage: leaf blade elliptic, apex acute, base cuneate; midrib raised on the upper surface; stipules narrowly triangular, drawn out into a narrow point at the apex, interpetiolar, puberulous on the outer surface. Seed germination time 27 to 47 days.
Probably endemic to Queensland, occurs in CYP, NEQ and CEQ. Altitudinal range from 100-1000 m. Grows in drier rain forest often associated with Kauri Pine (Agathis robusta).
