Usually encountered as a small tree only occasionally exceeding 30 cm dbh. Sapwood surface usually corrugated.

Leaf blades about 7-8 x 3.5-4 cm, petioles about 0.5-1 cm long. Domatia are quite large foveoles with a hooded surface and small orifice. Stipules triangular, about 2-3 mm long, drawn out into a fine point at the apex. Leaf bearing twigs +/- square in transverse section.

Flowers about 10 mm diam, emitting a strong almost overpowering perfume. Calyx lobes reduced to short broad teeth. Corolla tube about 2.5-3 mm long, lobes about 3.5-4 mm long. Anthers about 2 mm long, filaments about 1-1.5 mm long. Style about 7-8 mm long. Stigma mitriform, campanulate, terminal.

Fruits pyriform, about 15-18 mm long with a narrow orifice at the apex. Each seed enclosed in a hard bony endocarp, usually two seeds per fruit, each seed about 7 mm long. Cotyledons wider than the radicle.

Cotyledons about 22 x 3-4 mm. First pair of leaves narrowly ovate, apex acuminate, base attenuate, oil dots numerous especially near the veins and the midrib. Stipules about 2 mm long, broadly triangular, resinous, enclosing the terminal bud. Domatia are foveoles each with a small orifice partly obscured by hairs. Seed germination time 63 days.

Occurs in NEQ. Altitudinal range from 50-1200 m. Grows most commonly in well developed upland and mountain rain forest on a variety of sites.
