Stem

Usually flowers and fruits as a shrub about 1 m tall.

Leaves

Stipules linear or filiform, about 7-8 mm long and attached to the basal part of the compound leaf petiole. Recurved thorns about 2 mm long present on the stem, petioles and compound leaf rhachis and often on the underside of the midrib. Leaflet blades narrowly ovate, about 4.3-8 x 1.4-2.7 cm. Terminal leaflet usually larger than the lateral leaflets and the stalk of the terminal leaflet longer than those of the lateral leaflets. Teeth on the leaflet margin end in long acuminate tips. Scattered pale yellowish glands present on the leaflets, more numerous on the underside.

Flowers

Calyx hairy particularly on the inner surface. Sepals deltoid, about 6-11 x 2-3.5 mm. Petals deciduous, about 9-11 x 5-8 mm, glabrous. Pollen white ? Carpels glabrous, attached to a globular receptacle. One ovule per carpel. Styles white or cream.

Fruit

Aggregate fruit about 8-13 mm diam. Styles persistent at the apex and calyx lobes persistent at the base of the fruit. Seed enclosed in a seed-like endocarp which is rugose, netted or pitted on the outer surface.

Seedlings

Cotyledons +/- ovate, about 2-3 x 1-2 mm, margins +/- toothed. First pair of leaves simple, margins lobed or coarsely toothed, petioles longer than the blades, glandular hairs usually visible with a lens. At the tenth leaf stage: stem, petiole and compound leaf rhachis armed with recurved spines. Stipules filiform, about 6-10 mm long, attached to the base of the petiole. Seed germination time 31 to 40 days.

Distribution and Ecology

Occurs in NEQ and CEQ. Altitudinal range from 680-1200 m. Grows in disturbed areas (particularly along roads) in well developed upland and mountain rain forests.
