Leaves

Leaf blades about 6-13 x 2-5.5 cm, petioles about 0.6-0.8 cm long, grooved on the upper surface. Teeth (if present) are usually small and inconspicuous. Tendrils formed from modified branches. Stipules caducous, small and inconspicuous.

Fruit

Fruits globular, about 12-17 mm diam., calyx remnants persistent at the base. Seeds ellipsoidal, about 8-10 x 6.5-8 mm. Cotyledons fused together, partly free at the apex. Radicle and plumule difficult to find, present on the periphery of the cotyledonary mass just beneath the testa.

Seedlings

Seedlings completely glabrous. Usually 3-6 cataphylls produced before the first true leaves. First pair of true leaves elliptic, apex acute to acuminate, base cuneate to attenuate. Stipules about 0.7 mm long. Margin toothed, with five to eight small gland-like teeth on each side but mainly towards the apex. Narrow wings or ridges usually present on the stems with a pair extending down from the point of attachment of each petiole. Roots orange-coloured. Seed germination time 64 days.

Distribution and Ecology

There is some doubt about the application of this name to Australian material. Currently a couple of species from NEQ have been included in this circumscription. Altitudinal range from near sea level to 100 m. Grows in well developed lowland rain forest. Also occurs in Malesia.
