Stem

Erect to prostrate herb, stems 10-40 cm long. Scale-like catophylls on rhizomatous stems.

Leaves

Leaves 40-70 x 10-35 mm, all venation prominently raised on adaxial surface, margin minutely ciliate; petioles 0-3 mm long. Base of each leaf blade extends down the stem as two raised ribs, lamina margin thickened.

Flowers

Flowers scented, 10-15 mm diam., pedicels 5-30 mm long, articulated at base of flower; tepals all look the same, 8-10 x 2 mm, white to mauve, obovate, acute, with sides turned up to form a gutter-shaped unit in which the anthers are partly enclosed, base swollen on abaxial surface. Anthers ca. 2 mm long, filaments 3-5 mm long, brown to blackish. Ovary globose to obovoid, ca. 1.5 mm long. Style single at the base, but 3-branched towards the apex, 3-4 mm long. Stigmas 3. Ovules 2-4 per locule.

Fruit

Capsule ovioid, rugose, 5-8 mm diam. Seeds globose, angular, ca. 3 mm diam., yellow to brown.

Seedlings

Features not available.

Distribution and Ecology

Occurs in CYP and NEQ. Altitudinal range from near sea level to 1000 m. Grows in rainforest margins, riparian forest, Eucalypt forest, notophyll vineforest and Eucalypt woodland. Also from New Guinea.
