A herb to 1 m tall. Stems 3-angled.

Leaf blades linear, about 30-110 x 0.5-1.2 cm, M-shaped in transverse section. Margin minutely serrate, scabrous and also the midrib on the underside of the leaf blade. One vein on either side of the midrib more prominent than the rest.

Inflorescences narrow, with several small clusters of spikelets towards ends of the stem. Male spikelets with several flowers, female 1-flowered. Stigmas exceeding the scale-like tepals enclosing the ovary.

Nuts white, globular.

Endemic to Australia (?), occurs in NT, CYP, NEQ, CEQ and southwards to south-eastern Queensland. Altitudinal range from near sea level to 800 m. Grows in rain forest or in disturbed areas near rain forest but also found in woodland and open gallery forest.
