Symplocos bullata Jessup

Occasionally grows into a small tree but also flowers and fruits as a shrub.

Twigs, petioles, midrib and main lateral veins particularly on the underside of the leaf blade, clothed in brown hairs. Leaf blades arched between the lateral veins on the upper surface. Leaf blades about 6-10 x 2-2.5 cm, petioles about 0.6-0.8 cm long. Leaf blade margins very recurved.

Each flower subtended by 2 or 3 bracts which are densely clothed in hairs on the outer surface. Calyx lobes about 1-2 mm long, outer surface clothed in rusty brown hairs. Petals about 3-3.5 mm long, glabrous. Stamens about 6-9.

Fruits obpyriform or ampulliform, about 9 mm long, calyx lobes persistent at the apex. Endocarp thick and woody. Seeds about 6-8 mm long, testa longitudinally ribbed. Radicle curved, about 3.5 mm long, cotyledons straight, about 0.7 mm long and wider than the radicle.

Features not available.

Endemic to NEQ, known from the Mt Lewis to Mt Carbine area west of Mossman with an outlier at Mt Fisher south of Millaa Millaa. Altitudinal range from 1000-1300 m. Grows as an understory plant in mountain rain forest.
