Common name

Tinkling Satinash; Satinash, Tinkling

Stem

Frequently a poorly formed tree.

Leaves

Leafy twigs conspicuously 4-winged, two pockets being formed by the amalgamation of pairs of wings above each pair of leaves. Leaf blades about 7-14 x 2.5-4.5 cm. Petioles short. Midrib and main lateral veins depressed on the upper surface. Two intramarginal veins usually present, the outer one rather indistinct. Oil dots very numerous.

Flowers

Bracts subulate, about 1.5 x 0.2 mm, persistent till anthesis. Calyx tube (hypanthium) gradually tapering into the pedicel, calyx tube (hypanthium) + pedicel about 3-4 mm long, tube (hypanthium) about 2-3 mm diam. Calyx lobes very broadly triangular, about 0.2-0.3 mm long. Petals orbicular, about 1.5 mm diam., oil dots about 10-50 per petal. Outer staminal filaments about 4-5.5 mm long, anthers about 0.3 x 0.4 mm, gland terminal, well developed. Ovules about 5-8 per locule, placentas central, ovules radiating. Style about 5.5-7 mm long, approximating or exceeding the stamens.

Fruit

Fruits globular to depressed globular, variable in size, attaining about 12-15 mm diam. Calyx lobes small and inconspicuous, about 0.2-0.3 mm long. Seeds about 5-6 mm diam., testa slightly adhering to the succulent pericarp and easily separating from the uniformly textured cotyledons. Radicle central or basal, cotyledons purplish when fresh, cotyledonary stipules present.

Seedlings

Cataphylls about 2 or 3 pairs. At the tenth leaf stage: leaf blade obovate, glabrous; oil dots easily visible with a lens; stem distinctly 4-winged. Seed germination time 11 to 253 days.

Distribution and Ecology

Endemic to NEQ, known only from the area between the Windsor Tableland and Mt Bartle Frere. Altitudinal range from 50-1000 m. Grows along perennial creeks in well developed rain forest on a variety of sites.

Natural History & Notes

Generally a small, poorly formed tree, producing timber of no commercial value.

Wood specific gravity 0.69. Hyland (1983).
