Stem

Usually flowers and fruits as a shrub about 2-3 m tall, rarely attains the dimensions of a small tree.

Leaves

Stipules about 3-7 mm long, hairy, outside clothed in short reddish hairs, inner surface clothed in long white hairs. Stipule margins fimbriate at least towards the apex. Leaf blades about 7-22 x 2.5-9.5 cm, broadest towards the apex, petioles short. Lateral veins forming loops just inside the blade margin. Domatia are tufts of hair.

Flowers

Calyx densely clothed in straight, white, or pale pink hairs, tube (hypanthium) about 1.5 mm long, lobes about 1 mm long. Corolla tube about 3 mm long, outer surface clothed in white or pale-coloured hairs, lobes about 2 mm long +/- glabrous. Throat of the corolla tube tightly closed in the bud stage. Anthers yellow, about 2.5 mm long enclosed in the corolla tube, pollen yellow. Apex of the ovary hairy. Style + stigma about 4-4.5 mm long.

Fruit

Capsules +/- hemispherical, about 3-4 mm diam., calyx lobes persistent around the upper rim. Seeds numerous, small, about 0.5 mm diam. Testa reticulate. Embryo small, cotyledons about as wide as the radicle.

Seedlings

Cotyledons ovate or orbicular, about 1-2 mm diam. First pair of leaves hairy, opposite, +/- orbicular, about 1 mm diam. Stem hairy. At the tenth leaf stage: leaf blade obovate, about 20-30 x 10-12 mm, apex acuminate, base cuneate; lateral veins forming loops inside the ciliate blade margin. Petiole about 2-4 mm long. Stipules hairy, filiform to triangular, about 1-2 mm long, interpetiolar, connate at the base. Stem, petiole and both the upper and lower surfaces of the leaf blade densely clothed in long, erect, pink or reddish simple hairs. Seed germination time 45 to 225 days.

Distribution and Ecology

Endemic to NEQ. Altitudinal range from near sea level to 1622 m. Grows in slightly disturbed areas in lowland, upland and mountain rain forest.
