Harms, H.A.T. (1942) Botanische Jahrbucher 72 : 171. Type: Papua New Guinea, Lala River, 24 July 1935, Carr 13989; lecto: BM; iso: K, L, SING. Fide Pannell, C. M. (1992).

Stem

Usually grows into a small tree but also flowers and fruits as a shrub.

Leaves

Leaflet blades about 7-26 x 3-10 cm. Small oil dots visible with a lens on the upper surface of the leaflet blades. Terminal buds, young leafy shoots, leaflet stalks, compound leaf rhachis, midrib and main lateral veins (on the lower surface of the leaflet blades) clothed in small, reddish brown, peltate scales with irregular or fimbriate margins.

Flowers

Inflorescence branches clothed in rusty brown, peltate scales. Flowers pleasantly perfumed, about 1.5-4 mm diam. Calyx about 0.5-1 mm long, cup-shaped, sparsely to densely clothed in peltate scales, calyx lobes rounded. Petals about 2 x 1 mm, apex obtuse. Staminal tube about 1-2.5 mm long, anthers hairy, about 0.7-1.2 mm long. Ovary about 0.3-0.6 x 0.4-0.6 mm, densely clothed in peltate scales. Ovules 1 per locule.

Fruit

Fruits about 1.3-3.2 x 1.2-2 cm, globular, subglobose or narrowly ellipsoid on a stipe about 0.5 cm long. Fruits densely clothed in peltate scales. Seeds about 18-25 x 10-11 mm, partly enveloped in the aril. Aril pale +/- translucent but with orange overtones. Plumule clothed in rusty, stellate scales. Testa brown.

Seedlings

First pair of leaves sparsely clothed in stellate scales on the lower surface. Leaf blades about 25-30 x 15-20 mm, petioles about 3-4 mm long. At the tenth leaf stage: leaf blade about 8-8.5 x 2-2.5 cm, petiole about 15-20 mm long. Lateral veins 10 or 11 pairs forming loops just inside the blade margin, very small oil dots just visible with a lens. Terminal bud, stem, petiole, compound leaf rhachis and the lower surface of the leaflet blade clothed in peltate scales. Seed germination time 20 to 33 days.

Distribution and Ecology

Occurs in CYP. Altitudinal range from near sea level to 300 m. Grows in gallery forest and monsoon forest. Also occurs in New Guinea.
