Calophyllum bicolor P.F.Stevens

Stevens, P.F. (1980) Journal of the Arnold Arboretum 61: 536. Type: Papua New Guinea, Western District, Oriomo Creek, mouth of Yakup Creek, 40 miles from the sea,, 23 Sept. 1963, NGF 17746 coll. Womersley.

Grows as a tree up to 50 cm dbh.

Leaf blades about 6-12.5 x 2.5-4.5 cm, petioles about 0.3-0.4 cm long. Twigs and petioles clothed in soft spreading hairs. Lateral veins more than 60 on each side of the midrib, closely spaced, straight and parallel, extending from the midrib to the leaf blade margin.

Pedicels about 3.5-16 mm long. Tepals four, each about 4 x 2.8 mm. Stamens about 40, filaments up to 2.5 mm long, anthers about 0.7-1 mm long. Ovary about 1.2-1.5 mm long, style about 2 mm long, stigma peltate or funnel or trumpet-shaped, about 1.1 mm diam.

Fruits ovoid to ellipsoid, about 7-11 x 5-9 mm diam. Cotyledons pinkish. Radicle quite small, much smaller than the cotyledons.

Stem below cotyledons longitudinally ribbed. At the tenth leaf stage: more than 20 evenly spaced lateral veins extend to the leaf margin; stem 4-angled, slightly winged with a few scattered rusty hairs. Terminal bud clothed in dense rusty hairs. Milky exudate from petioles slow and meagre.

Occurs in CYP. Altitudinal range small, from near sea level to 150 m. Grows in well developed rain forest frequently found close to streams. Also occurs in the Aru Islands, Papua New Guinea and Irian Jaya.
