Family Description

A family of about 59 genera and ca. 1900 species, cosmopolitan but more common in tropical and subtropical regions; 21 genera occur naturally in Australia.

Genera

Argyreia - A genus of about 90 species in Asia, Malesia and Australia; one or perhaps two species occur naturally in Australia. Ooststroom (1953). One species has become naturalised.

Camonea - A genus of five species in tropical America, Africa, Asia, Malesia and Australia; two species occur in Australia. Simoes & Staples (2017).

Decalobanthus - A genus of 12 species in Asia, Malesia and the Pacific islands, one widespread species occurs from eastern Africa to the Pacific and Australia; one species occurs naturally in Australia.  Simoes & Staples (2017).

Distimake - A genus of ca. 35 species in tropical America, Africa, Asia, Malesia and the westerm Pacific islands; three species occur naturally in Australia. Ca. four species have become naturalised in Australia. Simoes & Staples (2017).

Erycibe - A genus of about 60-70 species in Japan, China, SE Asia, India, Sri Lanka, Malesia, Australia and perhaps some Pacific islands; one or two species occur naturally in Australia. Hoogland in Ooststroom (1953).

Ipomoea - A genus of about 500 species, pantropic and extending into the subtropics of the world; more than 30 species occur naturally in Australia and about 15 species have become naturalised. Ooststroom (1953).

Jacquemontia - A genus of about 120 species, particularly well developed in tropical and subtropical America but also in Africa(?), Asia, Malesia and Australia; a few species occur naturally in Australia. Ooststroom (1953).

Lepistemon - A genus of about 10 species in Africa, Asia, Malesia and Australia; one species occurs naturally in Australia. Ooststroom (1953).

Merremia - A genus of 10 species in Africa, Asia, Malesia and Australia; four species occur naturally in Australia. Ooststroom (1953); Simoes & Staples (2017).

Operculina - A genus of about 20 species, pantropic; four or more species occur naturally in Australia. Ooststroom (1953).

Stictocardia - A genus of ten species, pantropical; two species occur naturally in Australia. Ooststroom (1953); Johnson (2004).

Turbina - A genus of two or more species in tropical America; one species has become naturalised in Australia. Ooststroom (1953).

Xenostegia - A genus of two species in tropical parts of the world; one species occurs naturally in Australia. Wheeler et al. (1992).
