Family

Stem

Erect herbs to 50 cm high. Branches 5-6-angled.

Leaves

Leaf blades lanceolate to ovate, base attenuate, apex cuspidate, 30-80 x 7-40 mm, upper and lower surfaces clothed in hairs, lateral veins 5-8 on each side of the midrib, petioles 5-20 mm long.

Flowers

Inflorescence axillary with 4-5 bracteate clusters with subtending spines; bracts spathulate to ovate, 5-6 mm wide; bracteoles with glandular hairs; calyx similar in length; corolla deep pink or purple, upper lip with darker markings at base; stamens yellow, anthers globose; style 8-10 mm long.

Fruit

Capsules about 4 mm diam., the outer surface clothed in hairs. Seeds flattened, ca. 2.5 x 2 mm with numerous hairy trichomes on the surface. Cotyledons ca. orbicular, ca. 2 mm diam. Seed 1.5-1.7 mm diameter, glochidiate.

Distribution and Ecology

A native species, occurring in WA, NT, CYP, NEQ and CEQ. Outside Australia it occurs in Timor to Java and the Philipines. Occurs in rocky areas especially along creeks in monsoonal vine thicket.
