Family Description

A Cosmopolitan family of ca. 90 genera and 1700 species, world wide mostly temperate regions.

Genera

Asarina - A genus of about one species in Europe; one species has become naturalised in Australia.

Callitriche - A genus of about 30 species of aquatic or semi-aquatic herbs; four species occur naturally in Australia, four are considered to be introduced. Jacobs in Harden (1992); Bean (2007).

Mecardonia - A genus of 10 species native to the Americas; one species naturalised in Australia.

Plantago - A cosmopolitan genus, with approximately 270 species; ca. 13 species in Australia and 10 naturalised species.

Scoparia - A genus of about 20 species in tropical America; one species has become naturalised in Australia. Stanley & Ross (1986); Barker & Telford (1993).

Stemodia - A genus of 56 species from both the Old and the New Worlds; 20 species in Australia with 19 endemic.

Veronica - A genus of about 90 species in Australia, New Guinea and New Zealand.
