Reynolds, S.T. & Henderson, R.J.F. (2004) Telopea 6: 832. Type: Cook District, THornton Peak, alt. 4,500 ft, 14 Dec. 1940, N. Q. Nat. Cl, No. 7110, holo: BRI, iso: QRS.

Seldom exceeding 30 cm dbh.

Stipules about 3-5 mm long, usually but not always narrowed to a point at the apex. Leaf blades about 4.5-7.5 x 1.7-4.5 cm. Lateral veins forming loops well inside the blade margin. Domatia are small foveoles or depressions in the leaf blade.

Calyx lobes small, less than 0.5 mm long, calyx tube glabrous. Corolla tube about 2.5-4 mm long, glabrous throughout except for a ring of hairs on the inner surface at the apex of the tube, the lobes about 4-4.5 mm long. Anthers exserted, finely tuberculate, filaments hairy at the base. Stigma +/- cylindrical but shortly 2-lobed at the apex.

Fruits +/- pyriform, about 20-25 x 12-15 mm. Cotyledons linear-oblong, base not cordate, attached to the hypocotyl without any obvious petioles.

Cotyledons narrowly elliptic to linear, about 18-20 x 3-4 mm. At the tenth leaf stage: leaf blade +/- elliptic, apex acuminate, base attenuate, glabrous; stipules interpetiolar, triangular, acuminate. Seed germination time 65 days.

Distribution and Ecology

Endemic to NEQ, restricted to the higher mountains between Mt Sorrow and Mt Bartle Frere, and on Hinchinbrook Island. Altitudinal range from 400-1500 m. Grows as an understory tree in well developed mountain rain forest.

Ixora orophila C.T.White, Proceedings of the Royal Society of Queensland 53: 220(1942), Type: Cook District, Thornton Peak, alt. 4,500 ft., Dr. H. Flecker, 14th Dec., 1940. N.Q. Nat. Club, No. 7110.  Canthium sp. Thornton Peak (H.Flecker NQNC7110).
