Family Description

A family of about 34 genera and 1175 species, pantropic to warm temperate; one genus (Phyla) possibly occurs naturally in Australia.

Genera

Duranta - A genus of about 17 species in the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas; one species has become naturalised in Australia. Munir (1995).

Lantana - A genus of about 150-160 species originally from tropical America and Africa but several species are now pantropic weeds; two or three species have become naturalised in Australia. Munir (1996); Stanley & Ross (1986).

Stachytarpheta - A genus of about 60-70 species mainly in tropical America but several species are now pantropic weeds; four or more species and two hybrids have become naturalised in Australia. Munir (1992).

Verbena - A genus of about 250 species mainly in tropical and subtropical America with a few species in Europe and the Mediterranean region; seven species have become naturalised in Australia and one species is probably indigenous. Munir (2002).
