VB38 brown To be classed as brown, the blaze must be quite dark, darker than the paper commonly used in brown paper bags.
The blaze is the surface of the cut bark. It is divided into an outer and inner layer. The two layers may be distinct, but frequently they are not. Where they are not distinct, the division is made half way through the living bark.
