Leaf surface (leaves of mature crown)

Rough (scabrid and/or setose)

Leaves of the crown of some northern species of bloodwood and ghost gum have sparse to dense setae (multicellular bristle-glands) over the surface, sometimes confined to margins and main veins. These setae weather as the leaf ages and thus feel rough (scabrid) rather than hairy (e.g. Corymbia setosa, C. dendromerinx).

Smooth

Most species lack these setae and thus feel smooth.
