Dry forest, woodland, disturbed sites, along streams, and coastal lake margins. Widespread, mainly Sydney area and Canberra.
Introduced annual herb to 2.5 m tall. Stems more or less mealy, often grooved. Leaves alternating up the stems, about 2-10 cm long, 5-50 mm wide, both surfaces with mealy scales, margins entire, toothed, incised, or irregularly lobed. Flowers tiny (less than 3 mm in diameter), usually bisexual and female, the terminal flower of each part cluster bisexual; lateral flowers female. Flowers with 5 'petals' fused in the lower half, green or greyish, in small clusters, the clusters distinct or continuous. Flowers mainly Summer to Autumn.
