Forest margins, woodland, grassy areas, roadsides, old gardens, disturbed sites, and along streams. Widespread.
Deciduous tree or shrub to about 10 m tall. Spines 5-25 mm long along the stems, the short side-branches also ending in a spine. Bark smooth, becoming somewhat roughened towards the base of older plants. Stems hairless to hairy. Leaves alternating up the stems, 1–6 cm long, 10-60 mm wide, often 3–7-lobed and coarsely toothed. Flowers fragrant, white, cream, or pink, 8-15 mm in diameter, with 5 petals. Flowers in dense 6-15 flowered clusters. Flowers Oct.–Dec. Fruit red, yellow on the inside, 1-seeded.
