Tall wet forest in sheltered valleys. North of Mittagong. Coast, ranges, and Southern Highlands.
Tree to 65 m high. Bark smooth throughout, shedding in short ribbons or plates, sometimes powdery. Often a short stocking ot grey to grey brown rough bark on the lower trunk. Rough bark fibrous-flaky to scaly. Juvenile stems rounded or square in cross section. Juvenile leaves opposite each other for about 6 pairs, then alternating up the stems, 4–10.5 cm long, 25–60 mm wide, glossy, dark green, upper surface a different colour from lower surface. Crown often has many broader intermediate leaves, as well as adult leaves, creating a general broad-leaved appearance. Adult leaves alternating up the stems, 7–18.5 cm long, 15–40 mm wide, glossy or dull, darker green above, paler below. Flower clusters 7–11-flowered. Mature flower buds 4–7 mm long, caps shorter than the base. Flowers Feb-March. Gumnuts 4–7 mm in diameter. Gumnuts that have dropped their seed have protruding valves or valves that are not very noticeable.
