Damp places. Coast, ranges, and tablelands. Occasionally elsewhere.
Perennial herb to 0.5 m high, or prostrate or sprawling. Stems to 70 cm long, weakly 4-ribbed, hairy or rough with spreading hairs that are warty at the base. Leaves opposite each other, 0.5–2.5 cm long, 5–12 mm wide, densely hairy with long spreading hairs, margins with 10–15 small teeth. Flowers yellow-green,, with 4 hooded petals each 0.8–1.5 mm long, and 4 stamens; sometimes also 4 stamens that do not produce pollen. Flowers in spike-like clusters. Flowers mainly Oct.–Dec. Seed cases silver-grey to purplish, oval, 1–1.5 mm long, 8-ribbed with 3 oblique hard protrusions between the ribs. (needs a hand lens or a macro app on your phone/tablet to see).
