Perennial herb to 0.25 m high, hairless. Leaves clustered at the base of the plant, 2–25 cm long, 0.4–1 mm wide, angular in cross section, hairless, with a sheath at the base, gradually tapering to fine tips. Flowers bright yellow, or greenish outside, with 6 'petals' 2.8–12 mm long. Stamens 1.5–4 mm long, with filaments alternately long and short. Bracteoles paired, threadlike, 2–18 mm long, not sheathing. Flowers single or paired. 1-4 flower stalks per plant. Flowers late winter to summer.
