Weed of grassy areas and disturbed ground. Widespread.
Introduced annual herb to 0.6 m high. Stems usually deeply furrowed, the middle part usually densely hairy with glandular hairs. Leaves opposite each other, 1–6 cm long, 1–3.5 mm wide, linear, margins finely toothed, tips pointed, the stem-encircling sheath at the base at least twice as long as broad. Flowers with 5 more or less notched pink to purplish petals 10–13 mm long. Flowers appearing single, in tight heads surrounded by brown bracts, one flower opening at a time. Flowering: September–December.
Sometimes hybridises with Petrorhagia nanteuilii.
Was Petrorhagia velutina.
