Auranticarpa edentata L.Cayzer, Crisp & I.Telford

A small tree not exceeding 30 cm dbh. Blaze odour obvious but difficult to describe. Blaze finely layered, exudate meagre, inner blaze darkens on exposure.

Leaf blades about 5-6.5 x 1.5-2 cm, petioles about 1.5-2 cm long, channelled on the upper surface. Lateral veins slightly raised on the upper surface of the leaf blade. Freshly broken twigs have an odour like carrots (Daucus carota). Leaf bearing twigs glabrous.

Sepals lanceolate or narrowly ovate, about 2-3 x 0.7-1 mm. Petals about 5 x 2 mm. Stamens about 4-5 mm long.

Capsules ellipsoid to ovoid, +/- sessile, 2-valved, about 10 x 7-8 mm, glabrous. Valves less than 1 mm thick. Placentas with funicles attached near the base only. Seeds 1 or 2 per fruit.

Cotyledons ovate, elliptic or lanceolate, about 15-26 x 4-8 mm. First pair of leaves alternate, rhomboid or obovate, lobed or coarsely toothed towards the apex. At the tenth leaf stage: leaf blade irregularly toothed. Stem and petiole clothed in short erect glandular hairs. Broken roots emit an odour like that of carrots. Seed germination time 45 to 67 days.

Probably endemic to NEQ. Altitudinal range from 700-800 m. Grows in monsoon forest.

A small tree with great horticultural potential. It has an open upright habit and the bunches of white flowers are followed by small orange fruits that decorate the plant for many weeks.
