Stem

A small tree seldom exceeding 30 cm dbh.

Leaves

Twigs fluted or angular in transverse section, clothed in tortuous, brown, erect hairs. Leaf blades about 10.5-16.5 x 4.5-8 cm, green on the underside, clothed in mainly straight, white or pale brown, mainly appressed hairs when young but eventually becoming almost glabrous. Domatia are tufts of hair. Midrib raised or flush with the upper surface. Petioles flat on the upper surface. Numerous oil dots visible with a lens.

Flowers

Inflorescence paniculate sometimes almost racemose, scarcely exceeding the leaves. Flowers without any obvious perfume. Lower half of the perianth tube glabrous on the inner surface. Tepals about 1.1-1.9 mm long, pubescent on the outer surface. Ovary and style glabrous.

Fruit

Fruits globular, about 13-15 x 11-13 mm. Cotyledons cream.

Seedlings

First pair of leaves lanceolate, about 45-60 x 16-23 mm, green on the underside. At the tenth leaf stage: midrib slightly raised on the upper surface, hairy towards the base; hairs on the underside of the leaf blade prostrate; petiole grooved on the upper surface, hairy; oil dots clearly visible with a lens. Seed germination time 20 to 37 days.

Distribution and Ecology

Occurs in CYP. Altitudinal range from sea level to 100 m. Grows in well developed lowland rain forest and gallery forest. Also occurs in eastern Malesia (Key Island).

Natural History & Notes

This species has no commercial value as it seldom grows large enough to produce millable logs. Wood specific gravity 1.01. Hyland (1989).
