Endiandra limnophila B.Hyland

Hyland, B.P.M. (1989) Australian Systematic Botany 2: 238. Type: B. Hyland 12377: Between Lockerbie and Somerset, 8.xii.1982 (QRS, holotypus).

Usually a small tree not exceeding 30 cm dbh. Blaze odour noticeable, resembling that of Red Cedar (Toona ciliata).

Twigs terete, clothed in straight, appressed, pale brown hairs. Leaf blades about 5.5-12.5 x 3-5 cm, usually somewhat glaucous on the underside (at least when young), clothed in straight, appressed, pale brown hairs. Foveoles usually present, 3-6 per leaf, occasionally fewer. Midrib flush with the upper surface. Petioles flat on the upper surface. Oil dots visible with a lens.

Flowers opening quite widely, the tepals becoming almost horizontal at anthesis. Tepals about 0.7-1.4 mm long. Staminal glands six, free from one another. Staminodes three, differentiated into a head and stalk.

Fruits usually ellipsoid, sometimes pyriform, about 28-35 x 14-15 mm. Seed about 22-27 x 11 mm. Cotyledons cream.

First pair of leaves elliptic to obovate, about 50-65 x 24-27 mm, green on the underside. At the tenth leaf stage: a few scattered hairs may be present along midrib on the upper surface of the leaf blade; oil dots small, visible with a lens. Seed germination time 32 to 53 days.

Endemic to Australia, occurs in NT and CYP. Altitudinal range from sea level to 80 m. Grows in well developed gallery forest usually in swampy or wet situations along creek margins.

This species has no commercial value as it does not grow large enough to produce millable logs. Wood specific gravity 0.68. Hyland (1989).
