Family

Stem

Usually grows into a small tree but probably not exceeding 30 cm dbh.

Leaves

Leaf blades about 11.5-14.5 x 4-6 cm, petioles about 1-2 cm long. Margin sparsely toothed. Lateral veins forming loops inside the blade margin.

Flowers

Inflorescences ramiflorous or cauliflorous. Flowers paired, individual flowers shortly pedicellate (pedicels about 2 mm long) common peduncles short, about 1-2 mm long. Tepals about 15-21 mm long, pink. Anthers about 4.5 x 1 mm, filaments very short or absent. Hypogynous glands four. Ovary sessile, ovules about 11-12. Style glabrous, about 20 mm long.

Fruit

Fruits ellipsoid, about 43 x 33 mm, pericarp thick and leathery. Seeds about six or seven, subglobose to pyriform, rather angular, about 15 x 13 mm. Testa thin and membranous. Radicle about 3 x 1 mm, much smaller than the cotyledons.

Seedlings

Cotyledons +/- at ground level, green and fleshy, about 15-17 x 13-17 mm, base sagittate. First pair of leaves narrowly ovate, about 4.5-5 x 1.8-2.1 cm, apex drawn out acuminate, margin with about 5-9 teeth on each side. Midrib with scattered rusty brown, medifixed hairs on the lower surface and grooved on the upper surface. Stem with rusty brown medifixed hairs. Seed germination time 31 days.

Distribution and Ecology

Endemic to NEQ, known only from collections made on the mountains west and north west of Mossman. Altitudinal range from 1000-1100 m. Grows in mountain rain forest.
