Yellowish or orange stripes or speckles usually visible in the blaze. Blaze darkens on exposure.

Twigs +/- terete, clothed in tortuous and straight, white, erect hairs when very young, almost glabrous at maturity. Leaf blades about 8-27 x 4-8 cm, green on the underside, clothed in straight and tortuous, white, appressed and erect hairs when young, almost completely glabrous at maturity. Midrib cream, flush with the upper surface. Petioles flat or channelled on the upper surface. Oil dots visible with a lens.

Umbels completely enclosed in hemispherical, decussate bracts before anthesis. Male and female flowers without a perianth tube or tepals. Staminal glands peltate. Stamens about 10-14 per flower.

Fruit attached to the apex of a swollen receptacle but the base of the fruit not enclosed by the receptacle. Fruits (without the receptacle) +/- globular, about 12-14 x 11.5-14 mm. Seed about 8.5-10 x 8.5-10 mm. Cotyledons cream.

First pair of leaves lanceolate, about 55-85 x 15-30 mm, apex long acuminate, green on the underside. Cataphylls sometimes present above first pair of true leaves. At the tenth leaf stage: leaves ovate to lanceolate, hairy on the upper surface at least along the midrib; oil dots numerous, small, visible with a lens. Seed germination time 52 to 61 days.

Occurs in CYP and NEQ. Altitudinal range from sea level to 800 m. Grows in rain forest on a variety of sites. Probably also occurs in New Guinea.

This species produces millable logs and the sawn timber is marketed as Bollywood, a useful general purpose timber. Wood specific gravity 0.52-0.66. Hyland (1989).
