Nutmeg
Tree to 15 m tall. Branches often at right angles to trunk.
Leaf blades lanceolate to nearly elliptic about 6-20 x 2-8 cm, petioles about 6-17 mm long. Leaf blade paler underneath, glabrous to glabrescent on the underside. Petiole channelled on the upper surface. Lateral veins slightly depressed on the upper surface and usually forming loops inside the blade margin. Leaf reticulate tertiary venation on lower leaf surface faint or invisible.
Male flowers 1-several in axils or on woody tubercles; pedicel 2-3 mm long; calyx oblong in bud, 4.5-5 mm long, sparsely appressed puberulous outside and with red glandular dots; calyx lobes ca. 1 mm long, erect or slightly reflexed; anthers 6 or 7; androphore glabrous. Female flowers in fascicles of up to 3; pedicel 3-4 mm long; calyx ovoid in bud, 4-4.8 mm long, 2.3-2.8 mm wide; calyx lobes 1.2-1.8 mm long, spreading; ovary appressed puberulous.
Fruit ovoid, 2-3 cm long x 1.3-1.7 mm wide, sparsely puberulous, glabrescent; stalk 2-5 mm long, c. 2 mm wide.
Not available.
Occurs in a restricted part of the NT, including Melville Island. Also possibly occurs in the Tanimbar Island in eastern Indonesia.
