Jackes, B.R. (2005) Australian Systematic Botany 18: 416. Type: Qld, Timber Reserve 142 Zarda Logging Area. B. Hyland 6898, 26. vii. 1972; Holo: QRS; Iso: BRI, CANB.

Stem

Can grow into a small tree but often flowers and fruits as a shrub.

Leaves

Leaf blades elliptic to obovate, about 4-17 x 1.7-4.8 cm, usually asymmetrical (unequal-sided), petioles about 0.6-1 cm long. Midrib depressed on the upper surface of the leaf blade. Oil dots clear and orbicular, streaky oil dots and reddish oil dots very rare or absent.

Flowers

Flowers pedicellate, pedicels about 1-3 mm long, attached to short burrs on the twig. Calyx gland dotted, calyx tube about 0.5-1 mm long, lobes about 1 mm long. Corolla tube very short, lobes about 1.5-2.5 mm long. Anthers about 1-1.5 mm long, filaments very short. Ovary about 0.8-1.5 mm long. Stigma sessile, capitate. Ovules 3-4.

Fruit

Fruits globose, about 4-5 mm diam., calyx persistent at the base. Pedicel about as long as the fruit. Seeds about 3-4 mm diam. Embryo about 2.5-3 mm long. Cotyledons about 1 mm long and about as wide as the radicle.

Seedlings

Cotyledons ovate to orbicular, about 7-9 x 6.8 mm, margins toothed with about 1-7 teeth on each side. Oil dots small, pink to red. First pair of leaves elliptic-ovate with a few teeth on both sides of the midrib. Midrib depressed on the upper surface. At the tenth leaf stage: leaf blade asymmetrical, margin toothed with about 8-10 teeth on each side mainly towards the apex. Oil dots mainly clear and orbicular. Stem and terminal bud clothed in gland-like hairs or processes. Seed germination time 97 to 146 days.

Distribution and Ecology

Endemic to Queensland, occurs in NEQ and CEQ. Altitudinal range from 500-1260 m. Grows as an understory plant in mountain rain forest.
