Common name

Pandan, Damman; Damman's screw pine

Stem

Tree 10-12 m tall. Male plants may produce pups (plantlets) along the stem. Trunk with sparse appressed ascending rootlets. Prop roots present or absent. Plants male or female.

Leaves

Leaves 1.3-1.9 m x 50-60 mm. Margin with spines from just above base to middle, mid-section to apex spineless; midrib spineless.

Flowers

A terminal spike. Inflorescences male or female.

Fruit

Fruit a multiple fruit, orange or red, about 20-40 cm long x 14-25 cm diam, with about 10-15 segments (phalanges). Each segment about 5.4-6.5 x 5.4-7.5 cm, 5-6 angled. About 7-15 seeds per segment. Seeds about 15-23 mm long.

Distribution and Ecology

Occurs in CYP, and NEQ from Cooktown south to near Bowen. One record from Yirrkala in the NT. Altitudinal range from near sea level to 500 m. Grows in vine thickets, riparian forest, woodland and open forest.
