Pandan

Tree to 14 m tall, crown branched. Trunk thick, with sparse spiny, conical nodules on trunk (warty), and with many long to 3 m prickly prop roots. Plants male or female.

Leaves to 1.6 m long x 9.2 cm wide, 'M' shaped in cross-section, overal sword-shaped and gradually narrowed to a stout subulate apex. At very base without spines on margins and midrib below; above base, spines present, pointing towards leaf tip on margins and midrib.

A terminal spike. Inflorescences male or female.

Fruit a multiple fruit, yellow, about 18 long x 13 cm diam, with about 92 segments (phalanges) per cone. Each segment about 4.7-5.1 x 2.9-3.5 cm, obovoid. The outer end of each segment ends in 5-11 processes. Seeds about 16 x 4 mm.

Occurs in CYP from the Iron Range in the north to Silver Plains in the south. Altitudinal range from near sea level to 300 m. Grows in rainforest and vine forest.
