Trinius C.B. von (1826) De Graminibus Paniceis : 200.

Stem

Perennial. Culms decumbent or sprawling or clambering, striate, 50-200 cm tall, 4-7 mm diam., woody, 7-30-noded. Nodes pubescent. Mid-culm internodes 7-18 cm long, pubescent. Lateral branches branched.

Leaves

Leaves cauline. Leaf-sheaths pilose, with tubercle-based hairs, outer margin glabrous or hairy, with auricles. Ligule a fringed membrane 0.5-1 mm long. Leaf-blade base cuneate or broadly rounded; leaf-blades linear or lanceolate, 6-30 cm long, 7-25 mm wide, flaccid, light to dark green, discolorous. Leaf-blade surface smooth, glabrous or pubescent; apex acuminate.

Flowers

Inflorescence an open compound exserted panicle; elliptic or oblong in outline, 8-18 x 3-6 cm, evenly furnished. Peduncle pubescent above. Primary panicle branches ascending or spreading, 1-3-nate, 3-12 cm long, bearing 30-120 fertile spikelets on each lower branch. Panicle axis pubescent. Panicle branches bearing congested or distant spikelets. Spikelets solitary. Pedicels 0.3-1 mm long. Fertile spikelets 2-flowered, comprising 1 fertile floret, lower floret sterile, upper fertile, without rhachilla extension, elliptic or ovate, slightly dorsally compressed, subacute, 1.8-2.2 x 0.8-1 mm, falling entire. Rhachilla internodes brief up to lowest fertile floret. Glumes dissimilar, thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume ovate, gibbous, 1.2-1.8 mm long, 50-75% of length of spikelet, membranous, much thinner on margins, 3-5-nerved. Lower glume apex acute, muticous. Upper glume elliptic, 1.9-2.2 mm long, same length than spikelet, chartaceous, with hyaline margins, dark green, 5-nerved. Upper glume surface puberulous, hairy above, apex acute. Basal sterile floret 1. Lemma of lower sterile floret similar to upper glume, elliptic, 1.9-2.2 mm long, samef length than spikelet, chartaceous, much thinner on margins, dark green, 5-nerved, puberulous, acute, mucronate. Fertile lemma elliptic, dorsally compressed, 1.5-1.9 mm long, indurate, yellow. Lemma surface smooth, margins involute, apex mucronate. Palea involute, indurate.

Fruit

Testa very smooth and glossy.
