Common name

Yellow Plumwood; Axehandle Wood; Blunt Leaved Coondoo

Stem

Seldom exceeding 30 cm dbh. Bark exudate meagre. Blaze layering very fine.

Leaves

Twigs and petioles produce a milky exudate. Leaf blades about 2.5-12 x 1.3-9 cm. Lateral veins forming loops inside the blade margin and midrib raised on the upper surface. Terminal buds and young shoots clothed in brown hairs.

Flowers

Calyx green but covered with brown hairs, sepals suborbicular or narrowly ovate to triangular, about 3.5-6 x 2-4 mm, sericeous on the outer surface. Corolla about 5-11 mm long, the lobes about 2 mm long. Stamens inserted in the upper half to one third of the corolla tube, filaments about 0.5-3 mm long, anthers about 1-2 mm long. Staminodes lanceolate to linear, about 1-2.5 mm long. Ovary 0.5-2 mm long, densely tomentose. Style about 4-8 mm long.

Fruit

Fruits obliquely fusiform to ovoid, about 15-30 x 6-25 mm. Seeds 1-3 per fruit, ellipsoid to obovoid, sometimes oblique, about 12-22 x 4-11 x 2-8 mm. Testa hard and woody, hilum about 0.7-3 mm wide and nearly as long as the seed.

Distribution and Ecology

Occurs in NEQ, CEQ and southwards as far as coastal central New South Wales. Altitudinal range in NEQ from 450-900 m. Grows in drier, more seasonal rain forest often associated with Kauri Pine (Agathis robusta). Also occurs on Lord Howe Island.

Natural History & Notes

A common species that is cultivated as a wind break or as a screen.
