Sapotaceae
Family Description

A family of about 60-80 genera and at least 1300 species, widespread in tropical and subtropical parts of the Old and New World. Ten genera occur naturally in Australia and 36 native species, including one subspecies and one variety, and one naturalised genus (Chrysophyllum) with two species.

Genera

Amorphospermum - A monotypic genus, in New Guinea and Australia. Swenson et al (2013); Jessup (2019).

Donella - A genus of about 10 species, from Africa and India through south-east Asia to Australia; one species occurs naturally in Australia. Vink (1958); Jessup (2019).

Manilkara - A genus of about 50 species; 30 species in America; 20 species in  Africa and Madagascar; and 15 species in Asia and the Pacific. Two species occur naturally in Australia. Pennington (1991); Jessup (2019)..

Mimusops - A genus of about 20 species in Africa, 15 in Madagascar; four in the Mascarenes; one in the Seychelles; and one in Asia, Australia and the Pacific islands; one species occurs naturally in Australia. Niemeyera - A genus of four species endemic to Australia. Aubreville (1965); Guymer (1982); Pennington (1991); Swenson et al (2013); Jessup (2019).

Palaquium - A genus of 119 species in Asia, Australia and the Pacific; one species occurs naturally in Australia. Royen (1960); Jessup (2019).

Planchonella - A genus of about 110 species in eastern Asia, Australia and the Pacific; 12 species occur naturally in Australia. Swenson et al (2007a and 2007b); Swenson et al (2013); Jessup (2019).

Pleioluma - A genus of about 40 species, in southeast Asia to New Guinea, Melanesia and Australia and the Pacific; nine species occur naturally in Australia. Swenson et al (2007a and 2007b); Swenson et al (2013); Jessup (2019).

Sersalisia - A genus of about seven species from the Philippines to Australia; four species occur naturally in Australia. Aubreville (1963); Swenson et al (2007a and 2007b); Swenson et al (2013); Jessup (2019).
