Common name

Boxwood, Pink; Pink Planchonella; Pink Boxwood

Stem

Bark exudate appears quite rapidly and may be abundant. Cream, granular stripes and pinkish brown stripes may be apparent in the inner blaze.

Leaves

Young shoots densely clothed in reddish or ginger hairs. Leaf blades about 5-13 x 2.5-6 cm, margins frequently recurved. Petioles and twigs produce a milky exudate.

Flowers

Sepals ovate, about 3-3.5 x 2.5-3 mm, ferruginously tomentose outside, ferruginously sericeous on the inner surface. Corolla about 4-5 mm long, stamens inserted in the basal quarter of the corolla, filaments about 2-2.5 mm long, anthers about 1-1.5 mm long. Staminodes about 1.5-2 mm long. Ovary globose, about 1-2 mm long, ferruginously hispidulous, disk ferruginously hispidulous. Style about 2.5-3.5 mm long.

Fruit

Fruits obovoid, about 20 x 15 mm. Seeds two per fruit, obovoid, flat on one side, about 18 x 10 x 8 mm. Testa hard and woody, hilum about 1.5-2 mm wide and about 3/4 the length of the seed.

Seedlings

Cotyledons +/- elliptic, about 23-28 mm long. First pair of true leaves elliptic or obovate, margins entire, underside pale. At the tenth leaf stage: leaves obovate or narrowly obovate, hairy on the upper surface, lateral veins about 9-13 on each side of the midrib, forming loops inside the blade margin; petiole, stem and terminal bud densely clothed in erect and prostrate, brown hairs. Seed germination time 17 to 32 days.

Distribution and Ecology

Endemic to NEQ. Altitudinal range from 700-1200 m. Grows in well developed upland and mountain rain forest.
