Stem

Seldom exceeding 30 cm dbh.

Leaves

Leaf blades about 11-29 x 3-9 cm. Lateral veins forming loops well inside the blade margin with a tendency towards a double series of loops. Small oil dots visible with a lens. Two or three widely spaced, small, flat glands, visible towards the base, on the underside of the leaf blade between the midrib and each margin.

Flowers

Petals oblong, about 6-10 mm long, glabrous. Stamens ten, filaments about 4-6 mm long, expanded and clothed in white hairs towards the base. Disk beneath the ovary. The staminal filaments surround the disk. Style about 3 mm long, stigma 5-lobed.

Fruit

Fruiting carpels laterally compressed, ovoid or ellipsoid, about 28-45 x 17-25 mm. Seed about 20-25 x 13 mm. Cotyledons about 20-23 mm long, much wider than the radicle.

Seedlings

Cotyledons obovate, thick and fleshy, venation obscure or absent. First pair of true leaves elliptic, margins entire. At the tenth leaf stage: leaf blade elliptic, apex shortly acuminate, base cuneate to attenuate, glabrous on the upper surface; petiole with a few scattered hairs. Seed germination time 20 to 112 days.

Distribution and Ecology

Endemic to NEQ, restricted to the area between Cape Tribulation and Innisfail. Altitudinal range from near sea level to 750 m. Grows as an understory tree in well developed rain forest on a variety of sites.
