Samadera sp. Barong (B.Gray 742)

Occasionally grows into a small tree but usually flowers and fruits as a shrub about 2-4 m tall.

Leaves quite large, leaf blades about 24-40 x 5-10 cm. Lateral veins not very obvious on the upper surface and straight (not curved) forming an angle of about 90 with the midrib.

Flowers produced on the stem and twigs. Calyx lobes about 1 mm long, hairy on the outer surface. Petals about 5-6 mm long. Stamens eight, four opposite the petals and four alternating with the petals. Staminal filaments hairy in the lower half. Ovary clothed in long erect hairs.

Endemic to NEQ, known only from State Forest Reserve 755, Parish of Palmerston, Barong Logging Area. Altitudinal range from 80-300 m. Grows as an understory plant in well developed lowland rain forest.
