Stem

Erect, rhizomatous perennial shrub 1-2 m tall.

Leaves

Twigs, petioles and leaf blades armed with prickles 3-5 mm long and with dense stellate hairs. Adult leaves lanceolate or ovate, shallowly lobes on each side. Lamina 7.5-14 cm long, 2-4.5 cm wide. Prickles absent on upper and lower surface. Stellate hairs absent on upper surface or confined to midrib, dense on underside.

Flowers

Inflorescence branched, 7-20-flowered. Pedicels about 4-7 mm long. Calyx tube 1.5-2 mm long, lobes about 0.5-1.2 mm long, stellate hairy. Corolla purplish, about 5-7 mm long, glabrous on the inner surface. Anthers about 3-4.5 mm long. Ovary with stellate hairs. Style 5-7 mm long.

Fruit

Fruits 1-3 per inflorescence, globular, about 9-12 mm diam., red. Seeds about 3-3.5 mm long.

Seedlings

Distribution and Ecology

Endemic to CYP. Altitudinal range from near sea level to 150 m. Grows in semi-deciduous vine forest on sand.
