Oak grain in the wood and a corresponding pattern in the inner blaze. Living bark layer rather thin.

Oak grain in the twigs. Leaves very variable, simple leaves occurring high up in the crown while those on coppice shoots are very dissected, bipinnate or tripinnate and fern-like. Various intermediate leaf types occur elsewhere. Adult leaves simple, although some pinnate leaves are usually present. Simple leaf blades about 5-13 x 1-2 cm. Terminal buds and young shoots densely clothed in short, rusty brown hairs.

Inflorescence shorter than the leaves, each umbel with up to 15, but usually 12 or fewer flowers. Peduncles about 1.5-4 cm long. Pedicels about 6-12 mm long. Tepals about 8-12 mm long, sparsely ferruginous-puberulent outside, glabrous inside. Stamens sessile, anthers about 1 mm long. Hypogynous gland horseshoe-shaped. Ovary stalked, ferruginous-pubescent, about 2 mm long, ovules about 5-8. Style recurved, about 3 mm long, glabrous or sparsely hairy. Pollen presenter a broad, oblique disk.

Follicles about 6-7 x 0.3-0.6 cm. Seeds flat, with a narrow, oblong, terminal wing. Embryo about 7.5 x 2.5-3 mm.

Cotyledons obovate, 10-12 mm long. First pair of leaves compound, bipinnate, fern-like. At the tenth leaf stage: compound leaves finely tripinnate, leaflets sessile, apex finely pointed, often toothed or lobed. Seed germination time 24 days.

Endemic to NEQ, known naturally only from the Alexandra Logging Area, Thornton Peak and Mt Lewis. Altitudinal range from 650-1200 m. Grows in well developed upland and mountain rain forest.
