Syzygium pringlei (B.Hyland) Craven & Biffin

Usually encountered as a small tree not exceeding 30 cm dbh. Lenticels quite large and conspicuous. Outer blaze +/- grey-brown in colour.

Oil dots quite numerous. Midrib depressed on the upper surface. Leaf blades about 6.5-9 x 2-3 cm. Petioles about 0.2-0.3 cm long.

Inflorescence terminal, axillary and lateral on twigs below the leaves, bracts deciduous, normally absent at anthesis. Calyx tube (hypanthium) + pedicel about 11-17 mm long, calyx tube (hypanthium) about 4-6 mm diam., calyx lobes 4-5, rounded, up to 0.5 mm long. Petals 6-8, variable in size and shape, orbicular or oval, larger petals about 3-4 mm diam., about 20-50 oil dots per larger petal. Outer staminal filaments about 4-7 mm long, anthers about 0.7 x 0.5 mm, gland absent or inconspicuous. About 8-10 ovules per locule. Style about 5-10 mm long, approximating the stamens.

Fruit shape uncertain, probably cylindrical, turbinate or pyriform, surface irregular, excavated at the apex, about 13 x 6 mm, calyx lobes not obvious, pericarp succulent, cells radiating from the endocarp to the exocarp. Seed about 2.5 x 2 mm, testa apparently absent. Cotyledons uniformly textured but associated with a comparatively large amorphous intercotyledonary inclusion. Radicle position unknown.

Endemic to NEQ, restricted to the Melville Range area near Bathurst Bay. Altitudinal range from near sea level to 50 m. Grows in rain forest or fringing forest along creeks.

This species has no known commercial value. Wood specific gravity 0.97. Hyland (1983).
