Vine, Large-Leaved Fire; Large-Leaved Fire Vine

Vine stem diameters to 12 cm recorded. Blaze odour may resemble that of pepper (Piper nigrum).

Leaf blades about 10-21 x 4.5-10 cm, petioles absent or up to 15 mm long, channelled on the upper surface. Very difficult to decide where the leaf blade, petiole and wings begin and end. Petiole wing extending onto the twig like a stipule. 'Oil dots' elongated or oblong. Underside of the leaf blade finely scabrous. Oak grain in the twigs.

Flowers pleasantly perfumed. Sepals concave, about 5 mm diam. Petals concave, about 5 mm diam. Stamens numerous. Anthers obtriangular, about 0.7 mm long, anther locules about 0.2 mm long. Carpels usually 3, obpyriform, about 3 x 2 mm. Styles about 1 mm long.

Usually 3 fruiting carpels produced by each flower. Calyx persistent at the base of the carpels. Each fruiting carpel about 4-5 mm long including the persistent style at the apex.

Endemic to Queensland (?), occurs in CYP and NEQ. Altitudinal range from near sea level to 250 m. Grows in beach forest, monsoon forest, gallery forest and lowland rain forest.
