Seldom exceeding 30 cm dbh. Oak grain in the wood and a corresponding pattern in the inner blaze.

Oak grain in the twigs. Leaf blades very variable, about 7-26 x 2.5-10 cm, rather thick and leathery with comparatively short petioles about 0.1-0.2 cm long. Lateral veins forming loops well inside the blade margin, midrib raised on the upper surface. Oil dots visible with a lens.

Inflorescence up to 3-4 cm long, much shorter than the leaves. Male flowers: Flowers globular. Tepals in two pairs, small and inconspicuous. Receptacle glabrous on the outer surface. Anthers about 0.7 mm long, each opening by a horseshoe-shaped slit, filaments short. Female flowers: Flowers globular, operculate. Carpels about 8-22, about 1 mm long, glabrous, one ovule per carpel.

Receptacle yellowish or orange, swollen, pubescent. Fruiting carpels +/- sessile, ellipsoid to narrowly ovoid, about 13-20 x 10-12 mm. Seed ovoid, about 10-15 x 6-7 mm. Embryo about 2-6 mm long. Cotyledons about as long but slightly wider than the radicle.

Cotyledons ovate, about 16-40 x 10-20 mm, base rounded to cordate, apex acute or apiculate, a few teeth often present near the base. Cotyledonary petioles about 2-4 mm long, margins narrowly winged, wings almost clasping the stem at the base. First pair of true leaves about 21-28 x 3-10 mm, margins toothed. At the tenth leaf stage: leaf blade narrowly ovate, elliptic or obovate, apex acuminate, base attenuate, cuneate or cordate, margin serrate, teeth present at least on the apical half of the leaf blade, but often the teeth are all around the margins, glabrous. Seed germination time 43 to 178 days.

Endemic to NEQ. Altitudinal range from 100-1550 m. Grows as an understory tree in upland and mountain rain forest.
